 Narration Change of Exclamatory Sentence

(a) When the reported speech is an Exclamatory or Optative Sentence, the reporting verb is changed into exclaim, cry out, wish, pray etc. Some new words like with joy, with sorrow etc. are added to make the sense clear and complete.

(b) The exclamatory sentence is changed into a statement and the linker 'that' is used.

Direct: The poor man said, "Alas! I am undone."

Indirect: The poor man exclaimed with sorrow that he was undone.

Direct : The boys said, "Hurrah! We have won the match."

Indirect:The boys exclaimed with joy that they had won the match.

Direct: Ram said,"Hurrah! I have got a job."

Indirect: Ram exclaimed with joy that he had got a job.

Direct: Ram said,"Alas!I have lost my job."

Indirect: Ram exclaimed with sorrow that he had lost his job.

➤Exclamatory sentences sometimes begin with what, how etc. In such cases words like very, very much, great, greatly etc. are used.

Direct : He said, "What a beautiful sight!"

Indirect: He exclaimed with joy that it was a very beautiful sight.

Direct :He said to me, "How happy you are!"

Indirect: He told me that I was very happy.

Note: Though the Direct Speech ends with an exclamation mark (!), in Indirect Speech the sentence ends in a full stop (.).

Some special ways of changing the narration of exclamatory sentences :

Direct: She said, "Goodbye, mother!"

Indirect :She bade her mother goodbye.

Indirect : She bade goodbye to her mother.

Direct: The man said, "My goodness! What a big mistake I have made."

Indirect: The man exclaimed in wonder that he had made a great mistake.

Direct: The girl shouted, "Help! Help!"

Indirect: The girl shouted for help.

2.The boys shouted, "Hurrah! We have won the match."

3. The man said, "Alas! Her father is dead."

4. Nilanjana said to the tiger, "How great you are!"

5.Ram said to the peacock, "How glossy and colourful your feathers are!"

6. Ram said to Sita, "Oh! What a reasoning!"

7. Tarapada said to Suvendu, "Mind your own business, you fool!"

8. Apu said to Durga, "Oh, I am stung."

9.Sutanu said to Shantanu, "What a lot of alarming information!"

10.Ram said to Sita , "What a fantastic match !"
