Narration Change of Optative Sentences

 

Narration Change of Optative Sentences :

Sentences expressing wish or prayer are called optative sentences. Reporting verbs in such sentences are changed into pray, wish, desire etc. The form of a sentence is also changed into assertive and the linker is'that' .

Shortcut: 

(Past Tense)

Said/said to /told etc.➤wished/prayed etc.

Examples: 

1.Direct: The man said to him, "May you be happy."

Indirect: The man wished that he might be happy.

2.Direct:Mother said to me, "May God bless you."

Indirect :Mother wished that God might bless me.

3.He said to Ram, "May all your wishes be fulfilled."

Ans:He wished that Ram's all wishes might be fulfilled.

4.Grandfather said to me, "May God bless you."

Ans:Grandfather prayed that God might bless me.

Exercise :

1. He said, "May you live long."

2. The followers said, "Long live our leader."

3. My mother said, "May you shine in life."

4. Mother said, "May you live long, my son."

5.The teacher said to the students, "May you all succeed in the examination."

6.Sita said to Ram, "Had I the wings of a bird." 

7.Suzuka said to Doreman, "Had I the height of a palm tree."

Answers: 

He wished that I might live long.

The followers wished that their leader might live long.

My mother wished that I might shine in life.

Mother wished that her son might live long.

The teacher wished that all the students might succeed in the examination.

Sita strongly expressed her desire to Ram to have the wings of a bird.

Suzuka strongly expressed her desire to Doreman for the height of a palm tree.
