Abanindranath
Tagore was the principal artist and creator of the "Indian Society of
Oriental Art". He was born on 7th August ,1871 at Jorasanko in Calcutta. The
name of his father was Gunendranath Tagore and Saudamini Devi was his mother .
His grandfather , Girindranath Tagore and his elder
brother, Gaganendranath Tagore, were also artists. His sister , Sunayani Devi, was
an Indian painter. Tagore
learned art while studying at Sanskrit College, Kolkata in the 1880s. He
achieved his B.A degree from Sanskrit
College and M.A degree from University
of Calcutta. (He left Sanskrit College after nine years of study and studied English as a special student at St. Xavier's College). In 1890,around the age of twenty years, Abanindranath attended The Government College of Art & Craft in Kolkata
where he learnt to use pastels from O. Ghilardi, and oil painting from C.
Palmer. He was known for his
drawing ,painting and writing.His notable works of arts are Bharat Mata (1905) and Passing of Shah Jahan(1900).He
also wrote many books .His important books include Rajkahini, Buro Angla,
Nalak, and Khirer Putul .He died on 5th December ,1951. His death created a vacuum in the world of art.
