Transferred Epithet or Hypallage:
Transferred Epithet is a figure of speech in which an adjective (Epithet) is transferred from the place to which it properly belongs to another with which it is associated.
Example
(i) The ploughman homeward plods his weary way.
This is an example of Transferred Epithet. The way is not weary, but the ploughman is weary. The adjective is transferred from the ploughman to way.
(ii) I have spent sleepless night.
This is an example of Transferred Epithet.The night is not sleepless, but 'I' is sleepless. The adjective is transferred from 'I' to night.
(iii)He was engaged in a dishonest calling.
This is an example of Transferred Epithet. Here 'he' is dishonest. His call is not dishonest.The adjective is transferred from 'he' to call.
