Q.Sketch the character of Sir Mohan Lal.

Ans.Khushwant Singh's 'Karma' is a story about Sir Mohan Lal. The character of Sir Mohan Lal is revealed through his thoughts and feelings . He was educated at Oxford. He spoke English fluently. He followed their ways.. He was a barrister. He read The Times, wore Balliol tie, drank whisky and smoked only English cigarettes, His wife Lachmi was a native woman. He did not like her. She was not allowed to share the compartment with him. She was just a property to him. Sir Mohan longed for the company of the Sahibs. He hated India and his countrymen. He was not loud ,aggressive or opinionated like most Indians.Sir Mohan Lal suffered humiliation at the hands of those whom he befriended .He blindly imitates and practises European culture. His pride and arrogance get shattered when he is flung out of the train by the two British soldiers,Bill and Jim.It seems that Sir Mohan Lal has lost his identity .He is neither an Indian nor a British in true sense.
