The earthquake is one of the dreadful natural calamities. When the surface of the earth shakes or trembles, we call it an earthquake.The earthquake is mainly caused by the movements of the plates of earth's surface. Sometimes it is caused by volcanic explosion. We can not know when it will take place. It lasts for a few seconds. But it has immense devastating power.It can destroy a town or city or a village within a few second. Sometimes flood follows the earthquake because a river may change its course or break the embankments.Large cracks appear on the surface of the earth. Millions of people are killed. Those who survive lose everything.The amount of property damaged by an earthquake cannot be measured. Epidemic follows earthquake. Scientists are still unable to forecast an earthquake.

भूकंप भयानक प्राकृतिक आपदाओं में से एक है। जब पृथ्वी की सतह हिलती है या कांपती है, तो हम इसे भूकंप कहते हैं। भूकंप मुख्य रूप से पृथ्वी की सतह की प्लेटों की गति के कारण होता है। कभी-कभी यह ज्वालामुखी विस्फोट के कारण होता है। हम नहीं जान सकते कि यह कब होगा। यह कुछ सेकंड तक रहता है। लेकिन इसमें अपार विनाशकारी शक्ति है। यह कुछ ही सेकंड में किसी कस्बे या शहर या गांव को तबाह कर सकती है। कभी-कभी भूकंप के बाद बाढ़ आती है क्योंकि नदी अपना मार्ग बदल सकती है या तटबंध तोड़ सकती है। पृथ्वी की सतह पर बड़ी दरारें दिखाई देती हैं। लाखों लोग मारे जाते हैं। जो बच जाते हैं वे सब कुछ खो देते हैं। भूकंप से क्षतिग्रस्त संपत्ति की मात्रा को मापा नहीं जा सकता है। महामारी भूकंप के बाद आती है। वैज्ञानिक अभी भी भूकंप की भविष्यवाणी करने में असमर्थ हैं।
