Q.Answer the following questions:

1. What do most people think about the cat? [বেশিরভাগ মানুষ বিড়াল সম্পর্কে কী ভাবে? ]

Ans. Most people think that the cat is an unintelligent animal, fond of ease, and cares little for anything but mice and milk. [বেশিরভাগ মানুষ মনে করে বিড়াল একটি বুদ্ধিহীন প্রাণী, আরাম- স্বাচ্ছন্দ্যপ্রিয় আর ইঁদুর ও দুধ ছাড়া অন্য কিছুকে সে গুরুত্ব দেয় না।]

2. What is the cat really like? 

[Or] What is the character of the cat? [বিড়াল আসলে কেমন স্বভাবের?] অথবা [বিড়ালের চরিত্র কেমন?]

Ans. The cat has really more character than most human beings, and gets a great deal more satisfaction out of life. The cat is really a many-sided character. 

[প্রকৃতপক্ষে অধিকাংশ মানুষের চেয়ে বিড়ালের বেশি চরিত্রগুণ রয়েছে, এবং জীবন থেকে সে অনেক বেশি তৃপ্তি লাভ করে। বিড়াল আসলে একটি বহুমুখী চরিত্র।]

3. Whom is the cat compared to? [কার সঙ্গে বিড়ালের তুলনা করা হয়েছে?]

Ans. The cat is compared to an athlete, an acrobat, and a grim fighter. [বিড়ালকে একজন খেলোয়াড়, একজন ব্যায়ামকুশলী এবং একজন দুর্দান্ত যোদ্ধার সঙ্গে তুলনা করা হয়েছে।]

4. Who is an acrobat? [ব্যায়ামকুশলী কে?]

 Ans. An acrobat is a person who entertains people through difficult and skilful physical movements. [ব্যায়ামকুশলী হলেন তিনি যিনি মানুষকে বিভিন্ন রকম কঠিন ও সুনিপুণ দৈহিক কলাকৌশল দেখিয়ে আনন্দ দেন!] :

Here the cat is an acrobat.

5. What are the daily activities of the cat during the day? [Or]

 What does the cat do throughout the day?

[দিনেরবেলায় বিড়ালের নিত্তনৈমিত্তিক কাজ কী?] অথবা [সারাদিন ধরে বিড়াল কী কী করে?]

Ans. All day long the cat loafs about the house. To pass the time away he sometimes watches a mouse-hole for an hour or two. [সারাদিন ধরে বিড়াল বাড়ির চারপাশে ঘুরঘুর করে। সময় কাটানোর জন্য সে মাঝেমাঝে দু-এক ঘণ্টা ধরে ইঁদুরের গর্তের দিকে তাকিয়ে থাকে।]

6. What does the cat do to keep himself from dying of boredom ?

 [Or] How does the cat keep himself away from boredom ? [একঘেয়েমি দূর করার জন্য বিড়াল কী করে?] অথবা [বিড়াল কীভাবে নিজেকে একঘেয়েমি থেকে দূরে রাখে? ]

Ans. The cat watches a mouse-hole for an hour or two to keep himself from dying of boredom. [নিজেকে একঘেয়েমি থেকে বাঁচানোর জন্য বিড়াল ইঁদুরের গর্তের দিকে দু-এক ঘণ্টা তাকিয়ে থাকে।]

7. When can the cat's real character be seen ? 

[বিড়ালের আসল চরিত্র কখন দেখা যাবে?]

Ans. When the shades of evening fall, one can see the cat as he really is. 

[সন্ধ্যার ছায়া নেমে এলে বিড়ালের আসল চরিত্র দেখা যাবে ।]

1. When does the cat make an appearance to get his share of food? কখন বিড়াল তার খাবারের অংশভাগ নিতে হাজির হয়?

Ans. When the family sits down to tea, the cat puts in an appearance to get his share of food. [ পরিবারের লোকজন যখন চা খেতে বসে,বিড়ালটি হাজির হয় তার খাবারের অংশভাগ নিতে ।

 2. What happens when the family sits down to tea? [ পরিবারটি যখন চা খেতে বসে তখন কী ঘটে?

Ans. When the family sits down to tea, the cat appears to get his share of food. He purrs noisily and rubs himself against the legs of the family members. [ পরিবারটি যখন চা খেতে বসে তখন বিড়ালটি তার খাবারের অংগভাগ নেওয়ার জন্য হাজির হয়। সে সজোরে গরগর শব্দ। করে আর পরিবারের সদস্যদের পায়ে তার গা ঘষে।

3. What does the cat do to get something to eat? [বিড়ালটি কিছু খাবার পাওয়ার জন্য কী করে? ]

Ans. The cat purrs noisily, and rubs himself against the legs of the family members to get something to eat. [বিড়াল খাবার পেতে সজোরে গরগর শব্দ করে আর পরিবারের সদস্যদের পায়ে তার গা ঘষে।]

5. Who is the cat particularly civil to? [বিড়াল কার প্রতি বিশেষ ভদ্রতা দেখায়?]

Ans. The cat is particularly civil to the guest at the table. [বিড়াল টেবিলে খাবার খেতে বসা অতিথির প্রতি বিশেষ ভদ্রতা দেখায়।] 

6. When is the cat particularly civil and why? [বিড়াল কখন এবং কেন বিশেষভাবে ভদ্র আচরণ করে? ]

Ans. The cat is particularly civil when the guest is at the table. He is civil because the guest is expected to have the best food. [কোনো অতিথি যখন টেবিলে খেতে বসে বিড়ালটি তখন তার প্রতি বিশেষভাবে ভদ্র আচরণ করে। সে ভদ্র আচরণ করে কারণ সে আশা করে অতিথিকে সেরা খাবারটি দেওয়া হবে ।

7. What does the guest do to the cat? [ অতিথি বিড়ালটির সঙ্গে কেমন আচরণ করে?]

Ans. Instead of giving the cat something to eat, the guest stoops down and strokes the cat and says, “Poor pussy! Poor pussy!". [তাকে কিছু খেতে দেওয়ার বদলে অতিথি ঝুঁকে পড়ে এবং বিড়ালটির পা চাপড়াতে থাকে আর বলে "বেচারা পুসি! বেচারা পুসি!]

8. What does the cat expect from the guest ? [বিড়াল অতিথির কাছ থেকে কী আশা করে? 

Ans. The cat expects a portion of the food served to the guest. [বিড়াল অতিথির কাছ থেকে খাবারের কিছুটা অংশ আশা করে।

9. How does the cat feel when the guest strokes him? [অতিথি যখন বিড়ালটির গা চাপড়ান তখন তার কেমন মনে হয়?] 

Ans. The cat soon becomes tired of the guest's stroking. [বিড়ালটি অতিথির চাপড়ে শীঘ্রই ক্লান্ত হয়ে পড়ে।]

 10. What does the cat soon tire of? [বিড়াল কাঁসে শীঘ্রই ক্লান্ত বোধ]

Ans. The cat soon tires of the stroking of the guest. [বিড়ালটি অতিথির না চাপড়ানিতে শীঘ্রই ক্লান্ত বোধ করে।]

11. Why does the cat soon get tired? [বিড়ালটি কেন শীঘ্রই ক্লান্ত বোধ]

Ans. The cat soon gets tired of the guest's behaviour as he does not want patting and fondling, but he wants to get something to eat.

(বিড়ালটি শীঘ্রই অতিথির আচরণে ক্লান্ত হয়ে যায় কেননা সে চাপড়ানি আদর এসব কিছু চায় না, সে খাওয়ার জন্য কিছু একটা জিনিস ||

12. What does the cat do when the guest strokes him? [অতিথি যখন চাপড় দেন তখন বিড়ালটি কী করে?]

Ans. The cat puts up his claw and quietly but firmly rakes the guest in the leg. [বিড়ালটি তার থাবা তুলে শান্ত অথচ দৃঢ়ভাবে অতিথির পায়ে আঁচড় বসায়।]

13. Why does the cat scratch the guest in the leg? [কেন অতিথির পায়ে বিড়ালটি আঁচড়ে দেয়? ]

Ans. The cat scratches the guest in the leg as he is tired of stroking. He is angry because instead of giving him something to eat, the guest only strokes him. [অতিথির গা চাপড়ানিতে ক্লান্ত হয়ে বিড়ালটি তাঁর পায়ে আঁচড়ে দেয়। সে রেগে যায় কারণ অতিথি তাকে কিছু খেতে দেওয়ার পরিবর্তে শুধু তার গা চাপড়াতেই থাকে। 

14. What does the family think of that? [এতে পরিবারটি কী মনে করে?] 

Ans. The family thinks that the cat is very sweet and intelligent. [এতে পরিবারটি মনে করে বিড়ালটি ভারি মিষ্টি ও বুদ্ধিমান।

15. What does the guest like to do with the cat? [অতিথি বিড়ালটির সঙ্গে কী করতে চান? ]

Ans. The guest wants to kick the cat out of the window. [অতিথি বিড়ালটিকে লাথি মেরে জানালা দিয়ে বাইরে বের করে দিতে চান।]

 16. What does the guest not dare to do? [অতিথি কী করতে সাহস করেন না? ] 

Ans. The guest dares not do what he would like to do-kick the cat through the window. [অতিথির যা ইচ্ছে করে তা তিনি করতে সাহস করেন না—অর্থাৎ বিড়ালটিকে লাথি মেরে জানালা দিয়ে বাইরে বের করে দিতে পারেন না।]

17. What does the guest do? [অতিথি কী করেন? 

Ans. With tears of rage and pain in his eyes, the guest affects to be very much amused, and sorts out a bit of fish from his plate and hands the cat down.

 [রাগ ও যন্ত্রণায় চোখের জল নিয়ে অতিথি ভান করেন তিনিও বেশ মজা পেয়েছেন এবং প্লেট থেকে এক টুকরো মাছ বেছে নেন। আর বিড়ালটিকে ধরিয়ে দেন।

Ans. The cat very carefully receives the bit of fish from the guest.

19. What is the thing from which the cat stays at a safe distance ? [কোন্ জিনিস থেকে বিড়ালটি নিরাপদ দূরত্বে থাকে?]

 Ans. The cat stays at a safe distance from the guest's boot. [বিড়ালটি অতিথির বুটজুতো থেকে নিরাপদ দূরত্বে থাকে।

1. When does the true life begin for the cat? [বিড়ালটির আসল জীবন কখন শুরু হয় ] 

Ans. When the family finishes tea, and gathers round the fire, the cat casually goes out of the room and the true life begins for the cat. [পরিবারটি যখন চা খাওয়া শেষ করে এবং আগুনের চারপাশে জড়ো হয়, বিড়ালটি হালকা চালে ঘরের বাইরে বেরিয়ে যায় আর তখনই বিড়ালটির আসল জীবন শুরু হয়।

2. Where does the cat saunter down? [বিড়ালটি ধীরে ধীরে কোথায় যায়?]

Ans. The cat saunters down his backyard. [বিড়ালটি অলসগতিতে বাড়ির পিছনের উঠোনে চলে যায়।]

Ans. Dogs and small boys with stones are the enemies of the cat. (কুকুরেরা এবং পাথর হাতে ছোটো ছেলেরা বিড়ালের শত্রু।

 4. Why does the cat look keenly from side to side, and move noiselessly? [কেন বিড়ালটি তাঁর দৃষ্টিতে এপাশ-ওপাশ তাকায় আর নিঃশব্দে এগিয়ে যায়? ]

Ans. The cat looks keenly from side to side, and moves noiselessly because he has so many enemies-dogs and small boys with stones. [বিড়ালটি তীক্ষ্ণ দৃষ্টিতে এপাশ-ওপাশ তাকায় আর নিঃশব্দে এগিয়ে যায় কারণ তার অনেক শত্রু — কুকুরেরা এবং পাথর হাতে ছোটো ছেলেরা]

Ans. The cat stretches himself a few times to see that his every muscle is in full working order. [বিড়াল তার প্রত্যেকটি পেশি ঠিক আছে কিনা দেখে নেওয়ার জন্য শরীরটাকে কয়েকবার প্রসারিত করে।]

7. To whom does the cat send a call? [ বিড়াল কাদের উদ্দেশে ডাক দেয়? ]

Ans. The cat sends a call to his near ones, to his family members. [ বিড়াল তার কাছের লোকজন, তার পরিবারের সদস্যদের উদ্দেশে ডাক দেয়।]

8. Why are the cats compared to King Arthur's knights? [বিড়ালদের রাজা আর্থারের নাইটদের সঙ্গে তুলনা করা হয়েছে কেন?] 

Ans. The cats are compared to King Arthur's knights because they are also very skilful in performing difficult tasks like the gallant knights of King Arthur [বিড়ালদের রাজা আর্থারের নাইটদের সঙ্গে তুলনা করা হয়েছে কারণ ওরাও রাজা আর্থারের বীর নাইটদের মতো কঠিন কাজে পারদর্শী ||

9. Why doesn't the cat like to leave his country? [বিড়াল তার দেশ ছাড়তে চায় না কেন?] Ans. The cat doesn't like to leave his country because there are all his friends, and he knows every landmark there. [বিড়াল তার দেশ ছাড়তে চায় না কারণ সেখানে তার সমস্ত বন্ধু রয়েছে এবং সেখানকার প্রত্যেকটি জায়গা সে চেনে।

10. What would the cat have to learn if he is exiled in a new land?[নতুন জায়গায় নির্বাসিত হলে বিড়ালকে কোন্ জিনিস শিখতে হবে?

Ans. The cat would have to learn a new geography if he is exiled in a new land. [নতুন জায়গায় নির্বাসিত হলে বিড়ালকে আবার নতুন ভূগোল লিখতে হবে।
