Sea Fever

The author and the text:

John Edward Masefield (1878-1967) was an English poet, writer, and Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom from 1930 till his death. He is also remembered as the author of the children's novels. The Midnight Folk and The Box of Delights. The poem speaks of the excitement the poet feels at the anticipation of a sea- voyage. The passionate description of the seascape reveals the eternal desire of man to seek the splendour of nature.

I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky, 

আমি পুনরায় সমুদ্রে যাবই, নিঃসঙ্গ সমুদ্র এবং আকাশ,

আমি আবার অবশ্যই সমুদ্রে যাব, নিঃসঙ্গ সমুদ্র ও আকাশের পথে

And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by;

এবং আমি শুধু চাই একটি দীর্ঘ জাহাজ এবং তাকে পরিচালনার জন্য একটি তারা;

আর আমার শুধু চাই একটা বড়ো জাহাজ, ও সেটিকে চালনা করার জন্য একটি তারা;

 And the wheel's kick and the wind's song and the white sail's shaking, 

এবং চাকার ধাক্কা এবং বাতাসের গান এবং সাদা পালের ঝাঁকুনি,

চাকার ধাক্কা আর হাওয়ার গান আর সাদা পালের কাপন,

And a grey mist on the sea's face, and a grey dawn breaking.

এবং সমুদ্রের মুখের ওপর ধূসর কুয়াশা, এবং ধূসর ঊষার ভাঙন।

সমুদ্রের মুখে লেগে থাকবে ধূসর কুয়াশা, সূচনা হবে ধূসর ভোরের

I must go down to the seas again, for the call of the running tide

আমি পুনরায় সমুদ্রে যাবই, কারণ প্রবহমান জোয়ারের

আমি আবার অবশ্যই সমুদ্রে যাব, ছুটতে থাকা স্রোতের ডাকে,

 Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied;

ডাক সেটি এক উন্মত্ত ডাক এবং এক স্পষ্ট ডাক যাকে অগ্রাহ্য করা যাবে না 

এ এক পাগল করা পরিষ্কার ডাক যা অস্বীকার করা যাবে না;

And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying,

এবং আমি শুধু ঝোড়ো দিন চাই সঙ্গে চাই উড়ন্ত সাদা মেঘ,

আর আমি একটা ঝোড়ো হাওয়ার দিন চাই, সাদা মেঘ উড়বে

And the flung spray and the blown spume, and the sea-gulls crying.

এবং প্রক্ষিপ্ত জলের ঝাপটা এবং স্ফীত ফেনা, আর গাঙচিলের ডাক।

ভাসমান জলরাশি ও ফুলে ওঠা ফেনা, শোনা যাবে শঙ্খচিলের ডাক।

I must go down to the seas again, to the vagrant gypsy life,

আমি পুনরায় সমুদ্রে যাবই, সেই ভবঘুরে জিপসিদের জীবনে,

আমি আবার অবশ্যই সমুদ্রে যাব, ভবঘুরে জিপসি জীবনের ডাকে,

To the gull's way and the whale's way where the wind's like a whetted knife;

গাঙচিলের পথে, তিমির পথে যেখানে বাতাস ধারালো ছুরির মতো কনকনে

শঙ্খচিলের রাস্তা, তিমির রাস্তা, যেখানে হাওয়া যেন চকচকে শান দেওয়া ছুরি,

And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow-rover,

আমি শুধু চাই, হাসিখুশি সঙ্গী নাবিকের বলা মজার গল্প শুনতে,

এবং আমি শুধু চাই এক মজাদার গল্প একজন আমুদে সঙ্গী নাবিকের কাছ থেকে,

And quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trick's over.

আর শান্তির ঘুম এবং সমধুর স্বপ্ন যখন দীর্ঘ ভ্রমণ শেষ হবে।

যাত্রা শেষে একটি মিষ্টি স্বপ্ন আর একটি শান্তির নিদ্রা।
