Jean Nicolas Arthur Rimband (1854-1891) was a French poet from the nineteenth century. He started writing poetry even before he reached his teens. He stopped writing poetry at the age of nineteen. His major works include To Music, Evening prayer. The present poem, originally titled Le Dormeur le Val, was included in his collection of poetry called, Poesis (1872).

This poem has fourteen lines where the poet explores the inherent futility of war.This theme is expressed in the contrasting images of bountiful nature as background and the tragic death of a young soldier in the midst of nature's splendour. It  is an Italian sonnet.

A small green valley where a slow stream flows

এক ছোটো সবুজ উপত্যকা যেখানে ধীরে এক নদী বয়ে চলে

And leaves long strands of silver on the bright Grass

 আর রেখে যায় (ছেড়ে যায় )দীর্ঘ রুপালি তীরভূমি(ছাপ ) উজ্জ্বল ঘাসের ওপর; 

; from the mountain top stream the Sun's Rays;

পাহাড়ের ওপর থেকে নেমে আসে সূর্যের  রশ্মি

 they fill the hollow(valley )full of light.

 তারা শূন্যতাকে(উপত্যকা) ভরে দেয় আলো দিয়ে

A soldier, very young, lies open-mouthed,

 এক সৈনিক, খুব কমবয়সী, হাঁ করে শুয়ে রয়েছে, 

A pillow made of fern beneath his head,

 মাথার  নিচে বালিশ করেছে ফার্ন গাছকে,

(ফার্ণের তৈরী একটা বালিশ তার মাথার নিচে )

Asleep; stretched in the heavy undergrowth,

ঘুমোচ্ছে, তার শরীর মেলে দিয়েছে ঝোপঝাড়( আর লতাগুল্মের )

Pale in his warm, green, sun-soaked bed.

(ওপর ফ্যাকাশে, )বিবর্ণ লাগছে তাকে উষ্ণ , সবুজ, সূর্যস্নাত বিছানায়।

His feet are among the flowers , he sleeps.

তার পা রয়েছে ফুলের মধ্যে, সে ঘুমাই।

His smile is like an infant's-gentle, without guile.

তার হাসি হল শিশুর মতো—শান্ত, খাঁটি আর নিষ্পাপ (ছল চাতুরী বিহীন )

Ah, Nature, keep him warm; he may catch cold

ওহে প্রকৃতি তাকে উষ্ণ রাখো ; নয়তো তার ঠান্ডা লেগে যেতে পারে।(তার দেহ শীতল হয়ে যেতে  পারে )

The humming insects don't disturb his rest;

গুনগুন শব্দে উড়ে চলা কীটপতঙ্গরা তার বিশ্রামে  বিঘ্ন ঘটায় না।(ব্যাঘাত ঘটায় না;)

He sleeps in sunlight, one hand on his breast;

সে সূর্যের আলোয় ঘুমোয়, একটা হাত বুকের উপর

At peace. In his side there are two red holes.

নিশ্চিন্তে,(শান্তিতে )তার শরীরের পাশের দিকে দুটো লাল গর্ত।
