Summary of "A Snake in The Grass" by R.K. Narayan:

In the story "A Snake in The Grass" by R.K. Narayan, a family is disrupted when a cyclist informs them that he saw a snake entering their compound. The family, consisting of a mother and her four sons, takes the news seriously and gathers at the gate. They wake up their old servant, Dasa, and inform him about the snake. The servant, however, seems indifferent to the situation.

The family pressurizes Dasa to find and eliminate the snake, threatening to dismiss him if he fails. Some neighbors join in, accusing the servant of laziness. Dasa defends himself, mentioning his longstanding request for a grass-cutter machine. Amidst discussions about the machine and its price, a college boy from the family arrives and shares statistical data on snakebite-related deaths.

The family, armed with bamboo sticks, searches the garden but fails to find the snake. When the servant is questioned about the snake's whereabouts, he triumphantly claims to have caught it. An old beggar woman appears at the gate, and upon learning about the snake hunt, she declares the snake to be sacred, preventing its killing. The mother, recalling a promised ritual, gives a coin to the beggar.

Later, a snake charmer arrives, boasting of his skills but expressing helplessness without knowing the snake's location. The family discusses strategies and plans throughout the day. In the evening, the servant returns with a pot, claiming to have caught the snake. The family praises him, and he suggests handing the snake over to the nearby snake charmer. The mother appreciates the servant, who then leaves.

However, shortly after the servant's departure, the youngest son spots a cobra emerging from a hole in the compound. It glances at the gathering, crawls under the gate, and disappears along a drain. This creates a mystery—whether there were two snakes or not, and what was in the pot the servant took away. The story concludes with the unresolved question.
