  SECTION-A [READING COMPREHENSION (SEEN)]

1. Read the passage carefully and answer the questions that follow : 

Swami hoped that with this his father would be made to see why he must avoid school for the day. But father's behaviours took an unexpected turn. He proposed to send a letter with Swami to the headmaster. No amount of protest from Swami would make him change his mind. By the time Swami was ready to leave for school, father had composed a long letter to the headmaster. He put it in an envelope and sealed it. "What have you written, Father?" Swami asked apprehensively. "Nothing for you. Give it to your headmaster and go to you class." "Have you written anything about our teacher Samuel? "Yes, plenty of things."
"What has he done father?" "Everything is there in the letter. Give it to your headmaster." Swami went to school feeling that he was the worst boy on earth. His conscience bothered him. He was not at all sure if his description of Samuel had been accurate. He felt he had mixed up the real and the imagined Swami stopped on the roadside to make up his mind about Samuel. Samuel was not such a bad man after all. Personally he was much more friendly than the other teachers. Swami also felt Samuel had a special regard for him.

Once I crept in an oak-wood - I was looking for a stag.

Then she began to cackle and I began to quake.
 She opened up her little bag and I came twice awake -
Surrounded by a staring tribe and me tied to a stake.

We are chopped down, we are torn up, you do not blink an eye.
Unless you make a promise now - now you are going to die",

Unless you swear, the black oak bark will wrinkle over you

3. Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow:
A sub-adult tusker was electrocuted at Limboo Bustee in Turibari in Jalpaiguri's Oodlabari on Saturday, the 13th such incidents were reported in the past year and a half. The carcass was found on the bed of Gheesh river next to a paddy field. Burnt marks on the trunk indicated electrocution, but the culprits are yet to be identified. "The area falls under Baikunthapur forest division and the DFO is conducting raids to nab the culprits." said Rajendra Jakahr, chief conservator of forests, Northern circle. The forest department had been unable to prevent villagers in North Bengal from tapping electricity from high tension cables and laying electric traps for jumbos. To combat the problem, the forest department had held several meetings, but little has been achieved.
It is learnt the loner elephant had entered the river bank after staying of Bhuttabari forest. "These days, culprits are also taking power from household connections. It is our failure that we seen being able sensitize people.", said Shyma Prasad Pandey of Society for Protecting and Animal Rights.Environmentalists blame it on the indiscriminate settlement of people around forests. "The behavioural change in elephants is a result of the continuous man-elephant conflict", said Animesh Basu, a member of the state wildlife advisory board.
