Sikkim, April 5 2023 : A devastating avalanche hit The 14th Mile Point on Jawaharlal Nehru Road in Sikkim on April 4, 2023, around 11:30 AM. Despite heavy snowfall and restrictions for tourists beyond the 13th Mile Point, some individuals ventured further, triggering the tragic event. Local residents initiated rescue efforts, later joined by the army and state disaster management teams. 7 tourists were killed on the spot . 23 people were successfully rescued, 8 remain critically injured, and an unspecified number of victims are still unaccounted for. The rescue operation faced challenges due to adverse weather conditions, hampering efforts to provide immediate assistance. The injured have been admitted to army and state hospitals, with an additional 350 stranded tourists and 80 vehicles successfully rescued and brought to safety in Gangtok.
