The travelers, led by Hadji Muhammad Lamarty, start their adventure in Tangier, almost causing trouble when Blucher attempts to enter a Moorish mosque, an act forbidden to Christians. They glimpse the mosque’s interior but face disapproval from the Moors.
Years ago, the mosque’s clock needed repair, and lacking skilled locals, a Christian clock mender was brought in, humiliated by entering on all fours as an ass. This reflects the degraded state of Tangier’s artisans.
They visit a jail, finding prisoners making crafts. Murder is punished by death, but execution methods are clumsy. Thieves face brutal amputations, and despite primitive surgery, Moors endure pain stoically.
Marriages are arranged, and men see their brides only after marrying. Unsatisfactory wives are returned. Wealthier Muslims keep multiple wives and concubines, as do Jews in the interior. Moorish women, who hide their unattractive faces, carry children in sacks. Slaves can gain freedom through certain conditions.
Tangier observes three different Sabbaths: Muslim, Jewish, and Christian. Jews are strict, while Muslims perform brief rituals. Those who pilgrimage to Mecca earn the title Hadji, gaining respect despite the hardship and cost. Some fake wealth to make the pilgrimage.
Spain intimidates the Moors with military might, while other nations are less respected. Spain’s past conflicts with Morocco, including the Tetouan incident, have left lasting enmity. A French diplomat’s creation of a cat-hide carpet also sparked Moorish resentment.
The American Consul General, isolated in Tangier, finds little social interaction and limited news. His family’s routine is monotonous, highlighting the isolation of Tangier. Twain suggests appointing Tangier consuls as punishment for severe crimes.
Finally, Twain expresses readiness to leave Tangier for Gibraltar, with the Quaker City set to depart soon.
