Tragic Train Collision in West Bengal Leaves Five Dead, Dozens Injured

Darjeeling, October 12, 2024: A fatal collision between the Sealdah-bound Kanchanjungha Express and a goods train near Rangapani station in Darjeeling district, West Bengal, has claimed the lives of five passengers .Over 25 others have been injured in the tragic accident. The incident raises serious questions about the safety and efficiency of railway operations in the region.The accident occurred yesterday afternoon when a goods train reportedly rammed into the Kanchanjungha Express, causing the derailment of two coaches. Local authorities, including Additional Superintendent of Police Abhishek Roy, confirmed the severity of the situation, describing it as "serious." Emergency teams rushed to the scene to assist in rescue operations, while injured passengers were taken to nearby hospitals. The cause of the collision is under investigation, but preliminary reports suggest potential signaling issues or human error. The Indian Railways has also announced that several train services have been affected due to the incident. Two trains have been cancelled and at least 11 others diverted to avoid the accident site.  This tragedy comes just months after another derailment in Uttar Pradesh. On July 18, eight coaches of the Chandigarh-Dibrugarh Express derailed near Gonda, killing two and injuring over 30 passengers. Officials are still investigating the cause of that derailment, with unverified reports suggesting that a loud explosion might have triggered the accident. The Railways Ministry has expressed deep concern over these frequent incidents and reiterated its commitment to safety improvements. A comprehensive investigation is expected to determine the exact cause of the West Bengal collision, and officials have promised that necessary measures will be taken to prevent such accidents in the future.

দার্জিলিং, ১২ অক্টোবর, ২০২৪: পশ্চিমবঙ্গের দার্জিলিং জেলার রঙ্গাপানি স্টেশনের কাছে শিয়ালদহগামী কাঞ্চনজঙ্ঘা এক্সপ্রেস এবং একটি পণ্যবাহী ট্রেনের মধ্যে সংঘর্ষে পাঁচজন যাত্রীর মৃত্যু হয়েছে। এই মর্মান্তিক দুর্ঘটনায় ২৫ জনেরও বেশি লোক আহত হয়েছে। এই ঘটনা অঞ্চলটির রেল পরিষেবার নিরাপত্তা এবং দক্ষতা নিয়ে গুরুতর প্রশ্ন তুলেছে। 

দুর্ঘটনাটি গতকাল দুপুরে ঘটে যখন একটি পণ্যবাহী ট্রেন কাঞ্চনজঙ্ঘা এক্সপ্রেসকে ধাক্কা দেয়, যার ফলে দুটি বগি লাইনচ্যুত হয়। স্থানীয় কর্তৃপক্ষ, যার মধ্যে অতিরিক্ত পুলিশ সুপার অভিষেক রায়ও রয়েছেন, পরিস্থিতির গুরুত্ব নিশ্চিত করে একে "গুরুতর" বলে উল্লেখ করেছেন। জরুরি দলগুলি দ্রুত ঘটনাস্থলে পৌঁছে উদ্ধারকাজে অংশ নেয়, এবং আহত যাত্রীদের কাছাকাছি হাসপাতালে নিয়ে যাওয়া হয়।

সংঘর্ষের কারণ তদন্তাধীন, তবে প্রাথমিক প্রতিবেদনগুলি সংকেতজনিত সমস্যা বা মানবিক ত্রুটির সম্ভাবনা নির্দেশ করছে। ভারতীয় রেল কর্তৃপক্ষও ঘোষণা করেছে যে এই ঘটনায় বেশ কয়েকটি ট্রেন পরিষেবা ব্যাহত হয়েছে। দুটি ট্রেন বাতিল করা হয়েছে এবং কমপক্ষে ১১টি ট্রেন অন্যপথে চালিত হয়েছে দুর্ঘটনাস্থল এড়ানোর জন্য।

এই মর্মান্তিক ঘটনাটি উত্তরপ্রদেশের আরেকটি লাইনচ্যুতির কয়েক মাস পরে ঘটলো। ১৮ জুলাই, চণ্ডীগড়-ডিব্রুগড় এক্সপ্রেসের আটটি বগি গোঁডা স্টেশনের কাছে লাইনচ্যুত হয়, যার ফলে দুইজন নিহত এবং ৩০ জনেরও বেশি আহত হন। সেই লাইনচ্যুতির কারণ এখনও তদন্তাধীন, যেখানে অপ্রমাণিত প্রতিবেদনগুলিতে একটি বিকট বিস্ফোরণকে সম্ভাব্য কারণ হিসেবে উল্লেখ করা হয়েছে।

রেল মন্ত্রক এই ধারাবাহিক দুর্ঘটনাগুলি নিয়ে গভীর উদ্বেগ প্রকাশ করেছে এবং নিরাপত্তা উন্নতির প্রতিশ্রুতি পুনর্ব্যক্ত করেছে। পশ্চিমবঙ্গের এই সংঘর্ষের সঠিক কারণ নির্ধারণে একটি বিস্তারিত তদন্ত হবে, এবং ভবিষ্যতে এমন দুর্ঘটনা রোধে প্রয়োজনীয় ব্যবস্থা নেওয়ার প্রতিশ্রুতি দেওয়া হয়েছে।
