Prafulla Chandra Roy was one of the greatest scientists of India.  He was born in 1861 in Khulna, now in Bangladesh. The name of his father was Harish Chandra Raychowdhury and his mother was Bhubanmohini Devi.He received early education in /at a village pathsala.

He attended Hare School and Albert School.He passed Entrance examination in 1879.He passed F.A. in 1882 from Metropolitan College. He won Gilchrist scholarship in 1882. He went to London.He earned B.Sc. and D.Sc. from Edinburgh University. He joined Presidency College as a temporary Assistant Professor of Chemistry in 1889. He retired from the college in 1916.

He was the first to prepare Mercurous Nitrite in laboratory 1896. He established Bengal Chemicals in 1901.He became the first Palit Professor of Chemistry at the College of Science of Calcutta University.

He passed away in 1944. He is remembered for his contributions to chemistry.He will remain ever in the hearts of millions for his contribution in the field of science.
