The year 1901 was very important in Rabindranath's life. It saw the foundation of his school, Shantiniketan (The Peace Retreat) at Bolpur in Birbhum. He became the editor of the old and famous Bengali literary journal Bangadarshan, at one time edited by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, a famous literary personality of the nineteenth century Bengal. The intention behind his establishment of school at Bolpur was to form the nucleus of a cultural organization based on the model of the ancient Indian forest school which, through the imparting of education, would gradually become a centre of International culture. Here, in such a school, was evolved his conception of the perfect world citizen. The world, he had founded, was full of sound scholars, but not of sound men, and it was with the purpose of bringing out sound men that his school was started.
Rabindranath was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913, and a shower of honours followed that. An honorary Doctorate was conferred upon him by the University of Calcutta in the same year. In 1914 he was Knighted.
In 1919, in protest against the Jalianwalabag massacre in Punjab, Rabindranath renounced his title, but although the renunciation was declined, he himself never used this title again.
In 1921 he opened Viswa Bharati at Bolpur, turning his original Shantiniketan into a world University. An invitation came from Oxford in 1928 to deliver the Hibbert Lectures. This he accepted but could not deliver the lectures on that occassion owing to illness. He visited Russia in 1931 and wrote a book on the impressions he gathered about the life and thought of the people.
In 1940 he received from Oxford University D. Litt in a special convocation held in Santiniketan. The honour seemed a little belated.

Without an ideal, the happiness and progress of life would be impossible. The traveller who has no destination is slow in motion, his heart losing that enthusiasm which alone can prompt his energies. An aimless life is always dull and burdensome. It may well be comparred to a straw drifting with the current. Both are alike the sports of favourable or adverse circumstances. He who has a high aim in life, looks upon the world as a happy field of action, and sets about his work with untiring energy till he is crowned with success. The very effort for the realization of a high aim is a source of pleasure.
