Biography of Manmohan Singh
Manmohan Singh was one of the greatest economists and politicians of India. He was a renowned academician, bureaucrat, and leader.He was born on 26th September 1932 in Gah, Punjab Province, British India (now in Pakistan). The name of his father was Gurmukh Singh, and his mother was Amrit Kaur.He took his early education at a school in Chakwal, now in Pakistan.He passed his B.A. and M.A. in Economics from Panjab University in 1952 and 1954, respectively.He also earned a second B.A. (Honours) in Economics from St. John's College, Cambridge, in 1957 and a D.Phil. from Nuffield College, Oxford, in 1962.He authored the doctoral thesis on "India’s Export Trends and Prospects for Self-Sustained Growth" in 1962, which earned him global recognition.He was the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India from 1982 to 1985, where he made significant contributions to monetary policy.In 1991, during an economic crisis, he introduced pathbreaking economic reforms as the Union Finance Minister, liberalizing India’s economy. He served as the 13th Prime Minister of India from 22 May 2004 to 26 May 2014, initiating programs like the Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, National Rural Health Mission, and Right to Information Act.He received the Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament, and Development in 2009 for his contributions to India’s progress.Singh was also awarded the Padma Vibhushan in 1987, India's second-highest civilian honor, for his work in economics and governance.Manmohan Singh passed away on 26 December 2024, leaving a profound legacy in India’s political and economic history. He will remain ever in the hearts of millions for his contribution to India’s economic reforms and public welfare.
