 (ii) What is the advantage of adversity? 

Ans:Adversity always presents opportunities for introspection.

(iii) What 'safe remark" did the narrator make about the girl? 

Ans: The narrator told the girl that she had an interesting face. This was the safe remark.

(iv) How was the childhood of Kalam?

Ans: The childhood of Kalam was very secure,materially and emotionally.

 (v) What did Mrs. Jones's purse contain?

Ans: Mrs. Jones's purse contained everything except hammer and nails.

 (vi) Why did the Tsar go to the hermit?

Ans: The Tsar went to hermit to get the answer of his three questions.

(vii) How did Roger look like? 

Ans: Roger looked as if he were fourteen or fifteen,frail,willow wild, in tennis shoes and blue jeans.

(viii) Why was the bearded man attacked by the bodyguard of the Tsar?

Ans: The bearded man was attacked by the bodyguard of the Tsar because he was the enemy of the Tsar. According to bearded man the Tsar killed his brother and seized his property.

Ans: A tree can be killed ultimately by uprooting, scorching, choking, browning, hardening, twisting and withering.

Ans: The river leaves on the valley long stands of silver 

(xi) How can a tree be uprooted? 

Ans:A tree can be uprooted by roping tightly( to pull out and snap out.)

(xii) "...they fill the hollow..." What does the word 'hollow' mean here?

Ans: Here the word 'hollow' means valley.

(xiii) How do the darling buds of May' get affected? 

The darling buds of May' get affected by rough winds.

Ans: The grasshopper's voice shall run from hedge to hedge.

(xv) "So long lives this, and this gives life to thee" What does 'this' indicate? 

Ans: Here 'this' indicates the  Sonnet No. 18 of Shakespeare.

Ans : The grasshopper sings among the grassy hills.

Ans: But I knew that she wore slippers. 


 (vi) He's as ugly as a worn-out cab horse (Change into comparative degree).

Ans :A worn-out cab horse is not uglier than he.

(b) Fill in the blanks with appropriate articles and/or prepositions :


Having taken leave of the wounded man, the Tsar went out into the porch and looked around  for the hermit. Before going away he wished once more to beg an answer to the questions he had put.
