a rich business man many servants - golden wrist watch stolen suspected two of the servants - gave all of them sticks of equal length told to return next day - cautioned: 'thief's stick will grow an inch' - one cut off an inch in fear fact disclosed

The Clever Trick

A wealthy businessman lived in a large mansion, surrounded by many servants who took care of his daily needs. One day, he noticed that his prized golden wristwatch had gone missing. He suspected two of his servants but had no proof. To catch the thief, he came up with a clever plan.

The businessman called all his servants together and gave each of them a stick of equal length. He said, “I want you to return tomorrow with these sticks. But remember, the thief’s stick will grow an inch overnight.”

The next day, all the servants returned, but one of them had a stick that was an inch shorter than the rest. When the businessman questioned him, the servant, nervous and afraid, admitted, “I cut off an inch from the stick, fearing it would grow as you said.”

The businessman smiled and said, “That’s how I knew you were the thief. The thief's fear revealed the truth.”

The servant had inadvertently exposed himself, as only the thief would act out of fear.

Moral: Fear of being caught often leads to mistakes that reveal the truth.
